A Message from Chancellor Timothy Ryan...

I am pleased to invite you to explore our many offerings at The University of New Orleans, the urban research university of the state of Louisiana.  UNO is a comprehensive institution with diverse academic programs ranging from an internationally renowned Jazz Studies program to an acclaimed Naval Architecture program, one of only four such programs in the country.  At UNO, we offer quality, affordable education—and a history of excellence.  We proudly count among our graduates a top CNN producer, a prominent U. S. attorney, a University of Chicago astrophysicist, Louisiana’s Commissioner of Insurance, and the creator of The Roseanne Barr Show and Home Improvement.  Norma Jane Sabiston, former chief-of-staff for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, best-selling novelist Erica Spindler, Netscape founder Jim Clark, and jazz stars Nicholas Payton and Irvin Mayfield all hold degrees from UNO.

Our campus rebounded quickly from Katrina’s ravages, and we see in the hurricane’s aftermath unprecedented opportunity.  Post-Katrina, New Orleans offers students a living laboratory, unique access to hands-on participation in the biggest urban renewal project in American history.  In cooperation with the city’s leaders Chancellor Timothy Ryanand with its people, UNO is a key partner in the rebuilding of one of the world’s most fascinating cities. Students of urban planning, engineering, and environmental sciences will play key roles in strengthening our infrastructures and restoring our wetlands.  Through partnerships with businesses, students in our entrepreneurship program will help to rebuild the local economy.  Prospective teachers will study in an academic college that through its successful charter school initiatives is transforming the local school system.

As parents, you can rest assured that your children will live in a safe environment, in comfortable housing, whether they choose to live in Privateer Place, our on-campus apartment complex overlooking Lake Pontchartrain, our more traditional dorm Bienville Hall, or the new residence hall that will open in August 2007.  Your children can also take part in a rich social and cultural experience right on our campus—live jazz performances, movies, and athletic events—and the romance and history of the French Quarter or a vibrant art scene is only minutes away.

Thank you for your interest in The University of New Orleans.  For more information, please visit our web page at http://admissions.uno.edu/parents/.
