Dear Parents and Visitors:
I am pleased to invite you to explore the University of New
Orleans, the urban research University of the State of Louisiana. UNO
is a comprehensive institution with diverse academic programs
ranging from an internationally renowned Jazz Studies program
to an acclaimed Naval Architecture program, one of only four
such programs in the country. At UNO, we offer quality,
affordable education—and a 50 year history of academic excellence.
After Hurricane Katrina, three years ago, our campus rebounded
quickly and we are seeing unprecedented opportunity throughout
the city and the state of Louisiana for the UNO
family. The
University of New Orleans offers our students and faculty a living
laboratory, unique access to hands-on participation in the biggest
urban renewal project in American history. In cooperation
with the city’s leaders and
with its people, UNO is a key partner in the rebuilding of one
of the world’s most fascinating cities. Our academic programs
in urban planning, engineering, and environmental sciences play
key roles in strengthening our community’s infrastructures and
restoring our wetlands. Through partnerships with businesses,
students and faculty are helping to rebuild the local economy. Prospective
teachers study in educational programs that are transforming
the local school system through the University’s successful charter
school initiatives.
UNO resides in one of the most culturally rich cities in the
United States thus preparing our students for a career where
each one’s talent can be developed in an environment of unprecedented
creativity. Many academic classes at the University revolve around
the visual arts, theatre, music, film, cultural tourism, arts
education and creative writing. As a parent or visitor, you are
welcome to participate in a wonderful array of public performances
including jazz and other musical events, art exhibits, theatre
offerings and film festivals.
As you can see, the University plays a major role in educating
and improving the community in which we reside. We proudly carry
the name of our unique city and will continue to reflect the
strengths of our community. We will provide essential support
for the educational, economic, cultural and social well-being
of the New Orleans metropolitan area. We will serve as a link
between Louisiana and the nation and the world.
Thank you for your interest in the University of New Orleans. For
