Russian Pianist and Composer Nikita Mndoyants Kicks Off UNO's 2015-16 Musical Excursions Series Tuesday, Oct. 27

Nikita MndoyantsThe 2015-16 Season of Musical Excursions at University of New Orleans kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 27, with a solo performance from acclaimed Russian pianist and composer Nikita Mndoyants.

Mndoyants finished among the top six of the 2013 Cliburn Competition, 36 years after his father also won a Cliburn prize. He did so with performances that the Dallas Morning News tagged as “flawlessly paced, beautifully detailed, and emotionally powerful.”

At UNO, he will perform sonatas by Haydn, Beethoven and Prokofiev, and Schumann’s Davidsbundlertanse, op. 6.

In 2014, Mndoyants received first prize at the Myaskovsky International Competition of Composers. His works have been performed by Daniel Hope, Nicolas Stavy, the Szymanowski and Zemlinsky Quartets, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, and others.

This season, Mndoyants was commissioned by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music to write a piano quintet, which will have its world premiere in November 2015, with the Zemlinsky Quartet, shortly after his performance at UNO.

The University’s award-winning Musical Excursions concert series has presented first-class classical and world music since 1993. The series is a co-presentation of the UNO Music Department and Arts Administration Program and is presented in association with WWNO 89.9 Radio.

The series continues Dec. 2 with the contemporary New York City-based Mivos String Quartet; March 1 with British Baroque music quartet Red Priest; and April 12 with Mexico-based string quartet Cuarteto Latinoamericano.

All concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the UNO Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are free for UNO students, $5 for UNO faculty and staff, $5 for non-UNO students, $10 for seniors and $15 for all others.
