University of New Orleans Plans Memorial Service in Honor of History Professor Michael Mizell-Nelson

The University of New Orleans has planned a memorial service on campus to honor a beloved professor who died this month of cancer.

History professor Michael Mizell-Nelson died Monday, Dec. 1 at the age of 49 following a battle with cancer. Mizell-Nelson, who taught at UNO for the last 10 years, was a lifelong New Orleanian and a foremost authority on two quintessential New Orleans topics: the po-boy and the streetcar. He served as the public history coordinator for the UNO history department.

A memorial service will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11, in the Homer L. Hitt Alumni and Visitors Center on the Lakefront campus. The UNO community, friends and family are invited to attend.

The memorial service at UNO will be aired livestream on the University YouTube channel, so that loved ones who may not attend in person can hear prayers and comments from friends and family.

The schedule is as follows: 

12:00 Noon    Gathering and slideshow

12:30-1:30      Ceremony with speakers

1:30-3:00        Reception with music by Philip Melancon, Milk Bar poor boys, Cake Café red velvet cake, and more...

Mizell-Nelson's family will host a visitation for family and friends the weekend prior, from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 5212 S. Claiborne Ave.
