The University of New Orleans will award real estate executive and philanthropist Robert Merrick with an honorary doctorate at its fall commencement on Dec. 18 at the Lakefront Arena. Merrick is the chairman and CEO of Latter & Blum, Inc., a New Orleans-based company that is the largest full-service real estate brokerage in the Gulf South.

"Bob Merrick is a true real estate visionary and one of our region's great humanitarians," said President Peter J. Fos. "As a lifelong New Orleanian, he also cares deeply about his community and has given generously to numerous causes, including public higher education, throughout his career. He is extremely deserving of this honor."

Merrick is a nationally respected broker, developer and valuation expert. He purchased Latter & Blum in 1986 and, under his leadership, the company has become one of the largest real estate firms in the nation.

Earlier this year, Merrick gave $1 million to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, the largest single donation from an individual in the history of the organization. He's been awarded the American Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year and he's been inducted into the New Orleans Junior Achievement Hall of Fame.

Although Merrick is not a graduate of the University of New Orleans, he has been a longtime supporter of the institution. In September, Latter & Blum donated $100,000 to UNO; half of the gift supports the University's newly created graduate certificate programs in coastal sciences and engineering and the other half went to scholarships.

Merrick has served as a member of the UNO Foundation Board of Directors, endowed the Merrick Chair in Real Estate and contributed significantly to the creation of the Max Derbes III Professorship in Real Estate.
Latter & Blum, Inc. has been the title sponsor for the annual UNO/Latter & Blum Economic Outlook and Real Estate Forecast Seminar and Merrick provided a $25,000 donation to have Latter & Blum named Executive Partner of UNO's Institute of Economic Development and Real Estate Research.
