UNO Education Dean Receives National Geographic Society Award

Darrell Kruger, dean of the University of New Orleans College of Education and Human Development, received the Certificate of Appreciation Award from the National Geographic Society. Kruger is a geographer and anthropologist.

Kruger was recognized for more than 15 years of service in promoting grassroots geography education in K-16 in both Illinois and Louisiana. Before joining UNO in July 2013, he served as the director of the Illinois Geographic Alliance for more than a decade. In that role, he administered a $2 million endowment.

Some of the accomplishments of the Illinois Geographic Alliance during Kruger's tenure include: creating its first ever strategic plan; developing a statewide geography initiative for students; initiating a partnership with a public radio station to increase public awareness; directing summer teaching institutes; and devising "Lincoln on the Tri-State Heritage Trail," an interactive website with geographic alliances from Indiana, Kentucky and Washington, D.C.

Prior to becoming dean at UNO, Kruger was the interim associate vice president for research and graduate studies and manager of the Center for Emerging Entrepreneurs at Illinois State University. In 2012, he participated in the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management. From 2010 to 2011, he received the American Council of Education Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and from 2005 to 2010 he served as associate dean of the College of Education at Illinois State.

Before his time at Illinois State, Kruger was an associate professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he served as the undergraduate and graduate program adviser for geography and co-director of the Louisiana Geographic Education Alliance.
