Academic Advisor

POSITION SUMMARY: Academic advising at The University of New Orleans is an ongoing, consistent, deliberate process that intentionally fosters student growth and development. Advising is a collaborative relationship between a student and advisor. Advisors take a student-centered approach that enriches student learning and development in preparation for success with a diverse global society. This position will report directly to the Coordinator of Academic Advising in the Privateer Enrollment Center. In addition to working directly with students, the advisor will also work closely with department chairs, program chairs, faculty and staff. All advisors in the Privateer Enrollment Center will work collaboratively with senior academic advisors across the University. This position will participate in developing strategies that will enhance retention and promote students' connection to their academic program as well as the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Advise students in developing educational plans that are consistent with their goals and evaluate student progress towards those established goals.

Assist students to develop a long-range plan of academic study with the goal of ensuring timely degree completion. Assess student's academic progress towards degree completion. Perform and interpret degree audits. Assist students with career planning. Monitor student registration activities and recommend solutions or alternatives for students' unmet needs. Direct students towards campus resources that will enhance their ability to be academically successful including but not limited to: First Year Experience, tutoring services, Counseling Center, Disabilities Office, Financial Aid Office, and others.

Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees and keep accurate records, paper and electronic, of all interactions. Evaluate and determine the transfer of credits: research course descriptions to determine transferability.

Participate in departmental and college meetings related to student success and advising.


Bachelor's degree plus one year of professional work experience in a campus setting.  Knowledge of higher education and common practices.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counsleor Education, Educational Psychology, Career Counseling, Social Work, or related field.

SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience.
