Vice President for Research and Economic Development

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for oversight of all University research and economic development activities, including those sponsored by The Research and Technology Park located on the UNO campus. The Vice President will report directly to the President and serve on the Executive Cabinet. Promoting the University's mission in research, original scholarship and artistic creativity, are core responsibilities of the Vice President. Strengthening relationships with faculty, other universities, government agencies and industry will be a critical aspect of this position. Several prestigious research centers and institutes have Board of Regents approval and their faculty are among the most highly funded on campus. The Vice President must facilitate open communication with researchers and work to increase research productivity and improve the research environment. As a member of the strategic planning and other campus wide initiatives, this position requires short-term and long-term planning to recruit and retain the best researchers and ensure student involvement. The Vice President will be a proven collaborative leader with vision and a track record of improving the focus and quality of an institution's research portfolio. The Vice President will represent the University to a wide variety of external constituencies.

The University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park is adjacent to the main campus and won the 2003 Outstanding Research/Science Park Achievement Award from the Association of University of Research parks. Provides entrepreneurial leadership and direction for the growth and development of an academic research enterprise including multi-PI externally funded research centers.  Works closely with the deans, associate deans for research, center and institute directors, and faculty to enhance the university's capacity for innovative multi-disciplinary research and to coordinate initiatives in a wide variety of research areas and disciplines. Serves as chief research officer and expert regarding national research policy issues and promoting external research funding from federal, state, and private sources.

Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement. Works with university leadership to plan and execute the university's agendas for research, with specific emphasis toward influencing federal and state research-related legislative initiatives. Collaborates with other academic institutions and the broad-based technology-focused business community to expand the university's applied research capacity.  Spearheads technology development and transfer initiatives, including the intellectual property portfolio. Builds academic and commercial research partnerships with a strong focus on commercialization.

Develops and maintains programs to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and provides timely reporting as necessary for compliance with such programs.  Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, development and evaluation of assigned staff.

Provides leadership, strategic planning, and administrative direction for the following areas:  Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Staff; Office for Economic Development; Training Resource and Assistive Technology Center; and Operations and Training Assistance for Medicaid Contract. Performs other duties as assigned.


-Terminal/professional degree; experience and credentials appropriate for a tenured academic faculty appointment at UNO.

-A record of progressive and visionary leadership appropriate for graduate education.

-Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, and personnel and fiscal management.

-Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and other university constituents.

-Demonstrated commitment to high academic standards.  A strong understanding of academic issues, especially pertaining to academic integrity.

-Ability to work with academic units to create co-curricular components that advance student learning outcomes.

-An excellent understanding of governmental programs, agencies, and laws that specifically address university and student issues.

-Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

-Collaborative approach to resolving complex problems and forming solutions.


- Successful administrative experience at the chair or dean's office level.

- Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies.

- Experience in administering and obtaining grants and scholarships.

- Evidence of leadership in professional associations.

- Familiarity with regional accreditation processes.  

SALARY: Compensation commensurate with education and experience.
