Professor of the Practice (Biological Sciences)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Biological Sciences department at University of New Orleans (UNO) invites applications for a Professor of Practice with a specialty in the science of teaching. This is a non-tenure track faculty position with a three-year renewable term. The successful applicant will lead our undergraduate freshman biology courses as well as assist in leading of workshops to promote training of faculty in the department in transforming or flipping the classroom. The Professor of Practice is a teaching intensive position, and direct student contact through mentorship of student design projects is expected. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in taking a leadership role in enhancing the undergraduate experience of our students. A graduate degree in Biology, or Science education is required. The Department is seeking candidates with a strong record of practical experience in the areas of interest, a focus on developing and implementing curricula in biology, an interest in obtaining external education-related funding, the ability to work in teams, and a strong commitment to university service.
Professor of the Practice is a title to describe a non-tenured faculty position to be held by a limited number of eminently qualified academic, business, or government leaders who have made major impacts on fields and disciplines important to the Biological Sciences Department at UNO.  The title “Professor of the Practice” is intended to provide such highly regarded individuals with the position and respect that is customarily extended to faculty members who hold tenure.  This designation represents an effective and meaningful way for UNO to involve accomplished professionals who seek a position within UNO that does not fit the tenure track model.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The department is seeking candidates with a focus in teaching, developing, assessing, and implementing curricula in all aspects of biology, as well as an interest in obtaining education-related external funding.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    Applicants should have a graduate degree in biological sciences (PhD desirable) and experience with the science of teaching.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: (optional) : Recruitment efforts are focused on candidates with experience in the science of teaching biology.
