Department Chair/Professor

DEPARTMENT

Planning and Urban Studies

POSITION SUMMARY

The University of New Orleans and the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Human Development seeks candidates for a department chair for at least an initial term of three years subject to evaluation and renewal. This faculty position would also be at the rank of professor with tenure. Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in urban/regional planning, or a related field (e.g. social ecology, urban studies/design, applied ecology), which is required for the successful candidate to have demonstrated credentials and to ensure the granting of tenure. The candidate must also have a record suitable for hiring at the rank of full professor, preferably by earning that rank at a previous regionally accredited university. Research in the areas of Environment & Energy, Coastal Zone Planning, and/or Environmental Planning is preferred. Documented success at securing outside funding is strongly preferred as well. The Planning and Urban Studies department offers five degrees: a Bachelor of Science in urban studies and planning (both face-to-face and online), a Master of Science in Transportation, an accredited Master of Urban and Regional Planning, and a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Urban Studies. Additionally, the department offers three certificates: Geographic Information Systems, Historic and Cultural Preservation, and Disaster Management and Community Resilience. PLUS houses the University of New Orleans Transportation Institute and the Center for Hazards, Assessment and Technology. The successful candidate will have prior academic leadership experience, preferably as a department chair. The candidate will need to manage a small but diverse department, as described above, in the areas of fiscal responsibility, personnel management, curricular and program oversight, outreach and recruitment, and assessment. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and innovative leader, reporting to the dean and working closely with other chairs in the college, especially those in Anthropology/Sociology and Political Science/Public Administration. Discussions are underway about the college structure, whether a move to a School is warranted for this department, alone or combined with other departments. The successful candidate will be open to other structures that will strengthen and grow the programs in Planning and Urban Studies.
