How many passwords do I have?

All students start with one (1) password (e.g. E-mail, LAN, SharePoint, and WebStar). Changing your LAN and WebStar password changes your password for Moodle, E-mail, and SharePoint at the same time. We will NOT request or change any password via email. You will never receive an email from UNO or IT asking for password or account information.

 
How do I get my username and password?

All of your accounts share the same username and initial password. If you are a new student, you can obtain the password for your LAN, Moodle, WebStar, and E-mail account by visiting http://useraccount.uno.edu and clicking the link of the first paragraph.

Students can also obtain all their passwords in person (or on the phone) by visiting calling the IT Help Desk, or visiting them with a picture ID.

 
As a student, how do I get my outlook email account, and how do I log into it?

Your email account is automatically created once you have been admitted into the University.  You can log into it by typing your username@uno.edu and your LAN password into the correct fields.

 
As a faculty/staff member, how do I get my outlook email account, and how do I log into it?

Your email account is automatically created once you have been hired by the University.  You can log into it by typing your LAN username and password into the correct fields.

 
What should I do if my password has expired?

If you remember your password, you can click here and reset it to a new password. If you do not remember it, please call the IT Help Desk at 504-280-HELP (4357) and we will reset your password for you.

 
What should I do if my Outlook email account has been locked out?

Please call the IT Help Desk at 504-280-HELP (4357) and we will unlock your account for you. 

 
Why does my password expire every 6 months?

The expiration of everyone's password six months from when the last changed it is mandated by the state's Office of Information Technology. 

 
How do I change my passwords?

LAN - You will be requested to change your LAN account password when you log on to the LAN for the first time from an on-campus computer. However, if at anytime you are on a UNO domain computer and would like to change your password, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on the Change Password button. You may also visit the IT Help Desk, with a photo ID, to have your password changed.

Remember that passwords are case sensitive and that you must wait 15 minutes before attempting to use the new password. Passwords endure for 180 days (e.g. six months).

If you do remember your password, even if it is expired, visit http://useraccount.uno.eduand click the link in the fourth paragraph.

Please take this opportunity to enroll in our Self-Service Password Reset utility (SSPR), by going to http://useraccount.uno.edu and clicking the link in the second paragraph. Remember how you answer the questions and you will be able to reset your password on your own, even if you forget what it is, by navigating to http://useraccount.uno.eduand clicking the link in the third paragraph.

E-mail - Your E-mail password changes with your LAN account.

SharePoint - Your SharePoint password changes with your LAN account.

WebSTAR - Your WebSTAR password changes with your LAN account.

 
How do I choose a strong password?

Essentially a good password is one that easy to remember, easy to type, and not closely associated with you. There are some guidelines for creating a good password. 

 
How do I get Library Database passwords?

When accessing Library reference material, you may be requested to provide your UNO e-mail address (username@uno.edu) in order to receive your inquiry. The material (whether library passwords or documents) will then be sent to your UNO e-mail account almost immediately. Some library services, such as JSTOR, require a password to access. This is not your LAN password. To receive this password you must go to the Library Reference/Circulation desk or call them at (504) 280-6549.

 
I haven't used my WebSTAR/Email account in years, and it is not letting me log in now what should I do?

Please call the IT Help Desk at 504-280- HELP (4357) and we will reset your password for you so that you can access WebSTAR again.

Why does it have to be this long and difficult to create a password?

The 15+ character passwords are mandated by the state's Office of Information Technology.  The reason why students cannot have more 16 characters is a restriction set by Microsoft because of Outlook Live.  Since only student use Outlook Live, only their password have to be between 15 and 16 characters, faculty and staff do not have this upper restriction and can therefore be 15+ characters long. 

 
What is Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)?

The Self-Service Password Reset is a database that you can give security questions and answers that only you will see.  If you would like to reset your password and you do not remember your current password, you can go to the SSPR and reset your own password by answering the questions you provided correctly.  

 
What do I do if my password expired before I could change it?

If you remember your password, you can click here and reset it to a new password. If you do not remember it, please call the IT Help Desk at 504-280-HELP (4357) and we will reset your password for you.

 
How many times am I allowed to try a password before the account locks?

After 3 failed attempts, your account will lock. 

 
What do I do after my account locks because I tried my password too many times?

If I don't have SSPR should I click on 'reset expired password' even though my password hasn't expired yet?

Yes, if you remember your current password, you can reset your password through Reset Expired Password.  

 
The default password I was given when getting my user account doesn't work, what should I do?

Please call the IT Help Desk at 504-280-HELP (4357) and we will reset your password for you. 

 
Will I be informed about when my password is going to expire? If so will it tell me how to change it?

If you logon to your email through OWA, a banner will appear at the top of the page informing you of your password expiration.

You will also receive an email when you have 7 days until your password expiration.

 
Can I have a different password for my outlook email account from my WebSTAR account?

Anytime you change your password through WebSTAR, it will change your password for Moodle, WebSTAR, and Email.  If you change your password through OWA, it will only change your password for email and not for anything else.  Your password expiration will not extend if you change your password in OWA.  Therefore, we only recommend changing your password through the Password Change Request Page
