Please Describe your Research Focus:  My research focus combines the fundamentals of sports studies with core concepts in urban studies. My dissertation used the case study of the Saints in New Orleans to examine the importance of professional sports to urban residents.

The key findings demonstrated how Saints fans used their team to build a narrative of renewal and deliver messages about city recovery. As sports fans gathered to celebrate the shared experience of Saints football, they were able to foster public sociability and meaningful relationships across social barriers.

When did you know that you wanted to study in this field?:

I knew I wanted to study in the field of Urban Studies at UNO when I saw the opportunity to apply research and course work to solving real problems facing New Orleans, especially during a time of post-Katrina recovery. While I enjoy learning about the theoretical underpinnings of cultural, economic and social aspects of city life, the real world application provided the greatest rewards.

Any advice to new UNO graduate students?:

Choose a research agenda that you are passionate about. That is the best advice I can offer new UNO graduate students. If you do not love your research topic, it will be difficult to find the motivation to finish a thesis or dissertation. Also, establishing relationships with your advisor, fellow students, or other professors will create an invaluable support network during your time as a graduate student.
