Applying for Financial Aid

How do I apply for financial aid at UNO?

  1. Apply Early!!! Complete the 2011-2012 FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA and mail it to the federal processing center as soon as possible after January 1, 2011. You will need to have your 2010 federal tax information in order to complete the 2011-2012 FAFSA. Remember to list UNO (Title IV school code 002015) in Step Six of the FAFSA. You need only complete the FAFSA once for the academic year, even if you transfer to a different school. However, each academic year, you must complete the appropriate FAFSA in order to be considered for financial aid. If you are considering institutions other than UNO and need their Title IV School Codes, visit the Office of PostSecondary Education for a Code Search

    • You may complete your FAFSA on the Web instead of filling out the paper version. UNO strongly encourages all students to complete the FAFSA online.  This expedites the processing of your federal assistance.

    • If you applied last year, you may receive a Renewal FAFSA in the mail. For your convenience, the Renewal FAFSA lists the information that you had provided the previous year; you simply have to update the form and mail it to the processor. HOWEVER, if you have not received the Renewal FAFSA by late January, you should go ahead and fill out the blank FAFSA so as not to apply late.

  2. If you have already completed and mailed your 2011-2012 FAFSA but did NOT list UNO in Step Six, you do NOT need to complete a new FAFSA; however, you must contact the Federal Student Aid Programs at 1-800-433-3243 or log onto http://www.fafsa.ed.gov to update your application to include UNO. If you complete and mail a paper FAFSA, your SAR is mailed to you from the federal processing center approximately 4-6 weeks after filing the FAFSA. If you complete your FAFSA online and electronic SAR (ISIR) will be sent to the email address you indicated on your FAFSA.  If you have problems receiving your SAR or if you need a duplicate SAR, you may contact the federal processing center at 1 (800) 433-3243.

  3. In order to apply for financial aid for the Summer 2012 semester, a UNO Summer Financial Aid Request Form is required and may be obtained from the Office of Student Financial Aid during the second week of March 15, 2012.

  4. Students receiving veterans benefits must submit a copy of their Veterans Administration award letter verifying the amount of monthly veteran’s benefits. You may be able to obtain this documentation from the Veterans Affairs Office at UNO in the Administration Building, Room 112. Documentation must be submitted each year that you apply for aid.

  5. If your SAR indicates that your application has been selected for a process called "verification", you must submit the following documents to the UNO Office of Student Financial Aid. (NOTE: Keep a copy of each form you submit to our office since we do not return or photocopy documents submitted to us.)

      1. Submit a signed legible copy of the 2010 Federal Income Tax Return(s) as submitted to the Internal Revenue Service, and as indicated below (if federal tax return(s) was not and will not be filed, all W-2’s must be submitted). Print the student's name and social security number at the top of all documents submitted to our office (especially on parent’s tax returns)

        1. For Dependent students (applicants who were required to complete the parent sections on the FAFSA), you must submit the following:

          1. Copy of signed parent's 2010 federal tax return(s) and

          2. Copy of signed student's 2010 federal tax return

        2. For Independent students (applicants who were not required to complete the parent sections on the FAFSA), you must submit the following:

          1. Copy of signed student's 2010 federal tax return and

          2. If married, copy of signed spouse's 2010 federal tax return.

(NOTE: If 2009 federal income tax return was not and will not be filed, legible copies of all W-2 for 2010 must be submitted)

      1. Submit a completed, signed Verification Worksheet. You may obtain a blank Verification Worksheet from the Office of Student Financial Aid.

      2. If applicable, you must submit verification of social security benefits that you, your spouse (if married), and your parents (if you are classified as dependent) received in 2009. The verification document (usually Form 1099) should be obtained from the Social Security Administration.

      3. Other documents required and requested from our office.
