Setting

The University of New Orleans is an urban, state university with a diverse student population. Likewise, the client population of Counseling Services is quite diverse in age, culture, race, ethnicity and presenting problems. These factors create a unique atmosphere for an exceptional training experience for the highly motivated social work, counseling, or psychology student.

Mission

Counseling Services assists students in their psychological and vocational growth and development by providing short-term personal counseling, skills building workshops, career testing and counseling, and psychoeducational outreach and programming. High quality field placements and internships are our secondary mission. Training and supervision for students are provided by Counseling Services staff who are licensed, experienced, and highly-skilled mental health professionals.

About the Program

All graduate students who intern at Counseling Services will participate in a comprehensive orientation, weekly individual supervision, group supervision, case staffing, and didactic training. Training includes experiences within the following areas, all under the supervision of licensed professional staff:

  • Diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization and treatment planning
  • Individual counseling
  • Crisis intervention
  • Career testing and counseling
  • Psychoeducational screenings, seminars and workshops
  • Outreach programming and presentations
