Minority Awareness Program for Geoscience

Maybe you had or currently have an interest in river systems, deltas, coastal geology, Louisiana land loss issues, man's impact on natural landscapes, storm impacts on coastal areas, rocks, minerals or the earth's history in general.

What?

An educational summer field opportunity for students with an interest in the sciences and a curiosity for learning more about the natural world. Students will participate in science investigations as they travel and learn together.  Students will gain an understanding of the natural environments of their home state and build a foundation for studying science in college.

When is the program?

We'll start exploring on June 8 -14, 2014. 

How much are the fees and what is process for selection?

There is no cost associated with this program, but it is highly competitive.  We will select up to 14 top candidates through an interview process.  Please complete the attached application materials and return them NO LATER THAN April 30,2014 to be eligible.  We will begin interviewing the early candidates April 28 - May 2.  Please do not delay in submitting your application!

Where will the program take place?

We will visit coastal wetland locations, barrier Islands, the Mississippi River, the Atchafalaya River and Avery Island Salt Dome.  Overnight accommodation will be at state parks, US Department of Agriculture facility and UNO's Coastal Education and Research Facility.  Travel will be by UNO and rental vans.
