UNO-EES professors and students prepare for upcoming PEG 2013 symposium.

peg2013A group of 3 professors and 9 students from UNO will be traveling to Bartlett, NH at the end of May to participate in "PEG 2013 - The 6th International Symposium on Granitic Pegmatites". This will be the first time the symposium is hosted in North America, and the organizing committee has a very large UNO presence.

Pegmatites are a type of intrusive igneous rock with exceptionally large crystals. Though pegmatites are identified based on texture and can have any chemistry, many pegmatites are granitic in composition. They often represent the latest stage in the crystallization of a magma chamber and are sometimes enriched in gem-quality and/or rare-element-bearing minerals. Thus, they are targets for mining operations around the world.

The symposium will consist of 3 full days of both oral and poster presentations of recent scientific studies of granitic pegmatites around the world, as well as field trips to several pegmatite quarries in southeastern Maine. 8 of the 9 attending students will be presenting posters on their research projects.

Check out the PEG 2013 website for more information on the symposium.
