Students interested in the UNO Pre-Professional Programs should follow the guidelines and procedures listed below. Application forms and information sheets can be obtained from the Department of Biological Sciences office located on the second floor of the Computer Center in Room 200. Application forms should be completed and returned to the Biological Sciences Office.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Pre-Veterinary Medicine Advisor:

STEP 1. SELECT AN APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM: Pre-Optometry COURSE INFORMATION

Students interested in optometry as a profession should elect a four-year degree program that adequately prepares them for entry into optometry school. Most students choose biology or chemistry as a major. Pre-optometry students may, however, major in any subject, but should make sure that the selected major offers sufficient free electives so that all the courses required by optometry schools can be taken. Course requirements vary widely from one school to the next, and students should consult the ASCO web site for a detailed list of requirements for each school (http://www.opted.org). To quote from the ASCO web site, General requirements for all schools include: at least a year of Biology or Zoology, General Chemistry, General Physics, English, and College Mathematics. Contact the school or college of your choice to confirm. Please note there is considerable variation especially with regard to the organic chemistry requirement. Some schools require one semester, others two, and some allow biochemistry to substitute for one semester of organic.

Required Courses:
BIOS 1073, 1071, 1083, 1081
CHEM 1017, 1018, 1007, 1008
CHEM 2217, 2218(some schools only require one semester of organic)
ENGL 1157, 1158
ENGL Elective
MATH 1125, 1126,
MATH 2107, 2108 (only 2 of 17 schools require 2 semesters of calculus)
MATH 2314 (required by most schools)
PHYS 1031, 1032, 1033, 1034 or
PHYS 1061, 1062, 1064, 1065

Strongly recommended:
BIOS 2014 (Population Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology)

BIOS 2114 (Cell and Molecular Biology)
BIOS 4103 & 4113 (Biochemistry)
BIOS 3113 (Immunology)
BIOS 3284 (Histology and Cytology)
BIOS 3354 (Vertebrate Physiology)
BIOS 3953 (Genetics)
BIOS 4153 (Molecular Biology)
BIOS 4414 (Animal Development)
BIOS 4713 (Advanced Microbiology)
Bios 4490 (Virology, Cell Physiology or Reprod. Biol)

STEP 2. ADMISSION TESTING

Registration for the OAT can be done through the ASCO home page (http://www.opted.org/).

STEP 3. APPLICATION

Students should refer to the ASCO web site (http://www.opted.org/) for detailed information on prerequisites and application procedures.

STEP 4. UNO COMMITTEE ON PRE-MEDICAL AND PRE-DENTAL STUDIES

This committee consists of faculty members from the College of Sciences. The committee reviews your overall academic record and your personally solicited individual faculty evaluations. A committee evaluation, along with copies of the faculty evaluations and a Dean's Report on your standing in the College of Sciences, is sent to the optometry schools you have listed on the committee application form (see above).

Students near the end of the junior year or early in the senior year should submit materials to the UNO Committee on Pre-medical and Pre-dental Studies for evaluation and distribution to medical schools of their choice. This also applies to post-baccalaureate students who have taken at least 30 semester hours of course work at UNO. Qualified students should initiate this process by obtaining an application form at the Department of Biological Sciences Office (CRC 200) or from the links provided at the top of this page. When the application form has been completed, return it to the Biological Sciences Office. At that time you will be given three or four recommendation forms which should be hand delivered to professors who have agreed to serve as references. Recommendations should be solicited from faculty who have had adequate opportunity to evaluate your potential as an optometrist. It is the responsibility of the student to periodically check at the Biological Sciences Office to be sure the recommendations have been returned in a timely fashion.
