桜 SAKURA, Cello Quintet, will be performing at the University of New Orleans, Performing Arts Center, Recital Hall on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. through a partnership with the Birdfoot Festival.

SAKURA is a unique and versatile, southern California based, cello quintet made up of Michael Kaufman, Benjamin Lash, Gabriel Martins, Yoshika Masuda, and Peter Myers. SAKURA is named for the Japanese cherry tree whose flowers have five petals as well as cellist Ralph Kirshbaum whose name in German translates to cherry blossom, whom all five cellists have studied with.

In this performance, SAKURA will be playing a mix of traditional and new music, including Renaissance Madrigals, music by Beethoven and Bernstein, and Anne Wilson’s "Lament in Memory of Matthew Shepard."

This performance in partnership with Birdfoot Festival is also sponsored by Classical 104.9 FM, Louisiana Division of the Arts, the Arts Council New Orleans, and the City of New Orleans.

Ilya Yakushev

Ilya Yakushev, an award-winning, Russian pianist, has performed extensively around the world including Russia, Korea, Singapore, and the United States. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, the Boston Pops, and was the 2005 winner of the World Piano Competition.
