Missy Bowen earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Grinnell College in 1981, and an MFA in non-fiction writing from The University of New Orleans in 2009. At UNO she oversees all productions and operations, manages the finances, and is the department’s chief publicist and grant-writer. She co-produces the Jazz at the Sandbar series and oversees the Jazz Education Outreach program, among others. Her published essays have earned several honors, including the 2009 Robert Gibbons award and Ellipses magazine’s Best Non-Fiction award.

Bowen is also the host of a regular Thursday night blues show on world-renowned public radio station WWOZ. Prior to moving to New Orleans in 1995, she spent a decade in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, where she worked for KDNK Community Radio. She has served as executive producer for several recording projects, including “By the Water,” featuring blues legends Dave Ray and Tony Glover, and “Old Bayou Blues,” an acoustic CD by guitarist Camile Baudoin of The Radiators. She enjoys bird watching, live music, good humor, and writing about herself in the third person.
