Audition Requirements for Specific Instruments

Trumpet

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Haydn Concerto, Movements 1 & 3
    • Hummel Concerto, Movement 1
    • Kennan Sonata, Movement 1
    • Hindemith Sonata, Movement 1
  • One etude similar to Charlier #1 or #4

Horn

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Mozart Concerto No. 2, Movements 1& 3
    • R. Strauss Concerti, Movements 1 & 3
    • Dukas Villanelle o Hindemith Sonata
  • Two contrasting etudes from Maxime-Alphonse (Books 4, 5, and 6), Kopprasch, Gallay, or Reynolds

Trombone

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Grondahl Concerto
    • Hindemith Sonata
    • Guilmant
    • Casterede Sonata
  • One etude from Rochut Melodious Etudes 1-24

Euphonium

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Barat
    • Clarke
    • Jacob
    • Capuzzi
  • Two contrasting etudes from Bordogni/Rocut, Blazhevich, Kopprasch, or Tyrell

Tuba

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Hindemith Sonata
    • Vaughan Williams Concerto
    • Gregson Concerto
  • Two contrasting etudes from Bordogni, Kopprasch, or similar collections

Flute

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Mozart Concerti
    • Bach Sonatas or Partitas
    • Hindemith Sonata
  • Two etudes in contrasting styles from standard literature

Oboe

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Mozart Concerto
    • Marcello Concerto
    • Strauss Concerto
  • Two contrasting etudes from Ferling, Barret, or similar

Clarinet

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Mozart Concerto
    • Copland Concerto
    • Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie
    • Brahms Sonata No. 2
  • One etude from either Rose 32, Rose 40, or Jeanjean

Bassoon

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Mozart Concerto
    • Weber Concerto
  • Two contrasting etudes similar to Milde Concert Studies, Vol. 1

Saxophone

  • Two pieces from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles (may be two single movements from multi-movement works) similar in difficulty to:
    • Creston Sonata
    • Glazunov Concerto
    • Ibert Concertino da Camera
  • Two contrasting etudes similar to Voxman or Ferling

Percussion

  • Keyboard Percussion
    • One 2-mallet work from the standard repertoire
    • An excerpt not to exceed two minutes of a 4-mallet work
  • Timpani
    • One etude from Firth, Beck, Goodman, or Hochrainer
  • Snare Drum
    • One etude from Cirone, Delecluse, or Peters

Violin, Viola, 'Cello, and Double Bass

  • One movement from the standard concerto repertoire
  • One movement from a standard unaccompanied work, such as those by Bach
  • Two etudes in contrasting styles from the standard literature
