Background

Education: Ph.D., Tulane University, 2001

Dr. Verner graduated summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and received her doctorate from Tulane University with a specialty in medieval literature. Since coming to UNO in 2001, she has specialized in teaching "really old stuff," such as the Bible and ancient Greek and Roman literature. Her book, The Epistemology of the Monstrous in the Middle Ages, was published by Routledge in 2005. Her latest work, "Medieval Monsters, in Theory and Practice," appears in Giornale de Storia della Medicina 26.1 (2014): 43-68. Aside from her obvious interest in medieval teratology, Dr. Verner's research and teaching interests include women's and gender studies, biblical literature, classics, and film.

Since January 2016, Dr. Verner has served as the director of the University of New Orleans Women's Center. She has been the academic director for UNO's study abroad program in Rome, Italy, since 2011 and has also taught on study abroad programs in Prague, Japan, Innsbruck, Costa Rica, and France, where she enjoys dragging her family along, as documented here in Marseilles.
