Sustainability and Globalization

Historic New Orleans, an ideal place to learn about historic preservation and restoration, becomes a living laboratory for anyone studying Planning and Urban Studies at UNO. Our hands-on program encourages students to get involved in the community and to gain skills that will aid them in the field to effect local change.

Department of Planning and Urban Studies (PLUS)

The Planning and Urban Studies (PLUS) Department at UNO prepares students for the challenge of shaping urban and regional change locally, throughout the country and around the globe. PLUS is where art and science converge as we teach urban design, scientific research and public policy.

The department fulfills the university-wide mission to improve the quality of life throughout the New Orleans region. Our faculty works with federal, state, and local governments, non profits and businesses. We are involved in local issues such as neighborhood revitalization, transportation, cultural preservation, affordable housing, and environmental planning. We actively seek to balance historic preservation with growth and change.

We are professional planners, GIS specialists, economic developers, preservationists and environmentalists working in a truly multidisciplinary department.
