Chris Surprenant received his B.A. from Colby College and his Ph.D. from Boston University. His areas of specialization are History of Philosophy (Ancient and Early Modern, especially Kant), Moral Philosophy, and Political Philosophy.

His research focuses on the intersection among law, liberty, and morality. He is the founding director of the Alexis de Tocqueville Project on Democratic Ideals and Institutions, which promotes intellectual discussion and scholarship on the values of a democratic society, their justification, and how those values should be promoted. He has published articles on topics in moral philosophy, political philosophy, the history of philosophy, and the philosophy of education in a wide rage of academic journals including Kantian Review, The Journal of Social Philosophy, History of Philosophy Quarterly, The Journal of Moral Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and Topoi. His well-received, co-edited volume, Kant and Education: Interpretations and Commentary, was published by Routledge in 2011.

In the classroom, he is a dynamic instructor who teaches courses on the history of Philosophy, moral Philosophy, and political Philosophy. In 2012, he was recognized by The Princeton Review as one of the "Top 300 Professors" in the United States.
