Josh BaerPLUS Student Josh Baer Takes First Place in Innovate UNO Research Competition

Joshua Baer, a planning and urban studies major who works with the University's Merritt E. Becker Jr. Transportation Institute and the nonprofit Bike Easy program to study bicycling traffic in New Orleans, won "Overall Best" oral presentation for his research presentation "Bicycle Incidents in New Orleans." PLUS professor Dr. Michelle Thompson is the research project sponsor and advisor. Read more here.

MSUS Student Wins ASPA Section on Transportation Policy and Administration Student Paper Award

MSUS student Romain Cheynet is the winner of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) Section on Transportation Policy & Administration's Student Paper Award for his paper, "Access, Uses and Perceptions of Neighborhood Open Space: A Case Study of the New Orleans East Carrollton Area."  The Student Paper Award is awarded, on a competitive basis, to a student for a paper written on transportation policy or administration. Mr. Cheynet will be awarded a $100 cash prize for his excellent paper and will be honored at a reception sponsored by the Merritt C Becker, Jr. University of New Orleans Transportation Institute on March 15th at Manning's Restaurant.

President and CEO, Port of New Orleans
New Orleans, LA

Gary LaGrange has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Port of New Orleans since 2001. Under LaGrange’s direction the Port made great expansions in spite of great adversity. During his tenure, the Port opened new, state-of-the art container, cruise and refrigerated terminals. LaGrange’s leadership brought the Port of New Orleans back into operation two weeks after Hurricane Katrina, the most extensive natural disaster in U.S. history.

LIHTC Policy Report Released for CLTs

Associate Professor Marla Nelson and MURP graduate Elizabeth Sorce released a report for the National CLT Network, Supporting Permanently Affordable Housing in the Low-income Housing Tax Credit Program: An Analysis of State Qualified Allocation Plans. The report builds on the spring 2012 practicum project completed by MURP students Rachel Beasley, Brad Dodson, Kendra Home, Mark Kreitz, Michael LoStocco, Mike Madej, Leah Puffer and Elizabeth Sorce.

President, Waggonner & Ball Architects, Dutch Dialogues;
New Orleans, LA

David Waggonner is the president of Waggonner & Ball Architects, an award-winning design and planning practice located in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is also the initiator of Dutch Dialogues, an intercultural, interdisciplinary and intergenerational exchange between Dutch engineering and design professionals and their American counterparts focused on water-based urban design. Over the course of three Dutch Dialogue conferences in the years after Hurricane Katrina, David has articulated a new vision of New Orleans as a delta city living with – rather than against – water to address long-term development of urban character and form.

University of New Orleans Students Collaborate on Whodata.org

MURP Alumnus Selected for Inaugural Strong Cities Strong Communities Fellowship

October 2012

MURP graduate Cole Judge (Fall 2010) was among seventeen fellows selected for the Strong Cities Strong Communities (SC2) Fellowship program. The fellowship program, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, places highly qualified fellows in the seven SC2 pilot communities for a period of two years with the aim of building local capacity and supporting the development of transformative local plans and projects. Ms. Judge is a fellow at the Downtown Fresno Partnership in Fresno, CA.

Lakeview Civic Improvement Association Report Available

In September 2011 volunteers from the Lakeview Civic Improvement Association (LCIA) began taking inventory of street conditions in the Lakeview area of New Orleans, LA. MURP Student Report on Commercial Corridor Revitalization Programs

July 2012

University of New Orleans graduate student Alena Anderson has compiled a report on existing Commercial Corridor Revitalization Programs (CCRPs) in New Orleans. CCRPs are programs that support economic development along commercial corridors, also known as main streets. Anderson’s report was funded by the Foundation for Louisiana and produced with Michelle Thompson.
