UNO Professor of Children's Literature and Graduate Coordinator in Curriculum and Instruction Pat Austin has won the International Literacy Association’s Arbuthnot Award, given to members who are deeply engaged in preparing teachers and librarians.

The University of New Orleans First Year Experience's Common Read chose Aunt Alice Versus Bob Marley, a book written in the workshop of UNO College of Education's own Neighborhood Story Project. Written in 2010 by Kareem Kennedy, the book highlighted his experiences in the public schools of New Orleans, and brought the subject of public education to the forefront in classrooms across UNO.
