My major goals in teaching and research are to communicate the complex range of behaviors that can be used effectively in the classroom and to end the idea that there are unstructured classrooms. Classrooms are complex social structures, and managing their complexity is one of the things that teachers do; recognizing the nature of interacting and recursive factors such as tradition, beliefs, climate, institutionality, generativity, personal agendas, and the interplay of personalities requires an envisionment of classrooms as postmodern language settings that both learners and teachers interpret. My research involves work on collection and critical selection as a metaphor for the development of teacher expertise.
