Undergraduate Curriculum

The Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for a life-long career in all fields of the marine industry.  Program faculty is constantly reviewing and revising the curriculum to improve student learning outcomes and to adjust to changing requirements of engineering practice.  The faculty is supported in this process by industry representatives, alumni, and students.

The newest revision of the BSc NAME curriculum has been approved in Spring 2013.  The curriculum draws courses from five fields of study:

  • Math and science courses (33 credits)
  • Humanity, social science and economics classes (24 credits)
  • Basic engineering courses (24 credits)
  • Required Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) courses (35 credits)
  • Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) electives (12 credits).

A total of 128 credit hours has to be completed before graduation. Please observe the additional information on the College of Engineering web site and the University Catalog regarding graduation requirements.

Although the University considers a grade of "D" a passing grade, the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering requires its students to achieve a grade of "C" or better in

  • all courses that are prerequisites to 1000-level, 2000-level, and 3000-level NAME classes and
  • all courses that are prerequisites to NAME 4170 Marine Design.

Prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions of the Course Catalog and/or are indicated by arrows in the NAME curriculum flowchart.
