Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

The degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering prepares majors for careers in the US and international shipbuilding and offshore industries by applying the principles and laws of basic sciences and mechanics to the design and construction of commercial, naval, and recreational vessels as well as offshore structures and other floating systems.

The University of New Orleans is one of the select few universities to offer a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) degree. The program was founded in the early 1980's on initiative of the local shipbuilding and offshore industry. Since then the program has prospered and grown considerably, although Hurricane Katrina set us back momentarily in terms of student numbers. In Fall 2012, a total of 122 students enrolled into the BSc in NAME program. Due to a high demand for our graduates and the quality of our challenging program, we expect to continue to thrive and take our place among the best Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering programs in the world.

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of the Bachelor of Sciences in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program are to be recognized as well educated engineers consistently demonstrating exemplary professional capabilities.

Corollaries

  2. Graduates of the program are to have demonstrated the maturity and knowledge needed for participating in the leadership of the advancement of the NAME field.

Curriculum

The BSc in NAME program provides a rigorous engineering education.  Students develop analytical and creative skills which enable them to pursue a lifelong career in the marine industry. The program starts with necessary foundation courses in math, sciences, and basic engineering. It culminates in a capstone design course in which a small team of students designs a boat, ship, or offshore structure of their choosing. More details, flowchart and description of courses can be found under the menu items on the left.

Admission

Students apply to the University for admission. Forms and further information can be found on the UNO Admissions web page.
