Eighty University of New Orleans students participated in a half-day job shadowing experience earlier this month, connecting them with potential employers and giving them first-hand insight into what it might be like to work at Marriott New Orleans, WS Nelson Engineering, Laitram or Fifth District Savings Bank.
The Oct. 12 event was one in a series of job shadowing opportunities arranged by the University’s Office of Career Development. Landmark Event Staffing Services, which also hosted students on Oct. 15, has additional job-shadowing events scheduled for UNO students on Oct. 29, Nov. 5, Nov. 19 and Dec. 3.
Celyn Boykin, director of Career Services, said students were paired with leaders and grouped according to their majors or job interest in order to get a glimpse of what a day in the life of someone in their desired profession might look like.
“The aim was to give them a better understanding of what it is like to work in their current major field,” Boykin said.
Students who participated were included undergraduates and graduate students. Engineering majors were partnered with Laitram and Nelson. Hotel, restaurant and tourism administration majors visited Marriott. Accounting and finance majors went on-site at Fifth District Savings Bank. And Landmark Event Staffing leaders are being paired with students from a variety of majors, including business administration; hotel, restaurant and tourism administration; film and theatre; history; finance, accounting; pre-allied health and healthcare management.
