A website that ranks accounting degree programs named the University of New Orleans master in accounting as one of the top programs of its kind the country. Online-accounting-degrees.net ranked the UNO program 42nd among master's degree programs at public and private, non-profit colleges and universities nationwide. The UNO program is the only one from Louisiana to make the list.

The website makes note of several distinguishing aspects of the program.

“UNO’s rich accounting curriculum rivals that of much more expensive schools, with degree concentrations in accounting information systems, auditing and finance,” according to the site. “Even more impressive, UNO is one of the few schools in the country that offers an Internal Auditing Program endorsed by the Institute of Internal Auditors.”

“We are delighted to receive this accolade for our master’s degree program,” said Philip J. Harmelink, chair of UNO’s accounting department. “Our department holds a distinction from our accrediting body that places it among the top two percent of academic accounting programs worldwide. This recognition of our master's degree program is further evidence of the quality education experience available at UNO,” Harmelink added.

Factors considered in rankings were average score and overall pass rate for the Certified Public Accountant exam, average tuition and relative popularity among business students. Popularity among business students was measured by calculating the percentage of students at the school who chose to earn a degree in accounting over another business or finance discipline using data from College Navigator, a consumer information tool maintained by the U.S. Department of Education.
