Grammy Award-winning harmonica genius Howard Levy and Moroccan guitar master Mahmoud Chouki are just two of the jazz legends appearing in the Spring 2017 Jazz at the Sandbar concert series at the University of New Orleans.
The acclaimed series, now in its 27th year, opens Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in the Sandbar at The Cove on UNO’s campus, with local trumpet favorite Wendell Brunious performing with UNO students.
Other artists include: pianist Amina Figarova; drummer and 2017 Offbeat Lifetime Achievement honoree Johnny Vidacovich; pianist Cyrus Chestnut; banjo wizard and crowd favorite Don Vappie; and saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr.
Jazz at the Sandbar is presented each Wednesday night for eight weeks during the fall and spring semesters and features a different respected jazz artist each week.
The series, established by Ellis Marsalis in 1990, pairs seasoned professional musicians with UNO jazz students on the bandstand in a club environment.
The Sandbar, located in the renovated Cove building on the western edge of the Lakefront campus, features a convivial atmosphere, food and libations.
All members of the UNO community are welcome for free; for all others, a donation of $5 is suggestion.
