New Orleans’ musical patriarch and University of New Orleans jazz studies professor emeritus Ellis Marsalis will kick of the fall 2017 Jazz at the Sandbar series. Now in its 28th year, the acclaimed series opens Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Sandbar at The Cove on UNO’s campus. Jazz at the Sandbar is presented each Wednesday night for eight weeks during the fall and spring semesters and each performance features a different respected jazz artist.

During his tenure as the first chair of the jazz studies program, Marsalis launched the series to provide opportunities for UNO students to gain live performance experience alongside seasoned professionals. This season’s guest artists bring a different instrument to the stage each week. After Marsalis opens the season with accompaniment on piano, the following week’s lineup will include a guest vocalist. Next is a percussionist, followed by a trumpeter, guitarist, bassist and clarinetist.

Here is the full Jazz at the Sandbar lineup for fall 2017:

October 4: Pianist Ellis Marsalis

October 18: Percussionist John Wooton

October 25: Trumpeter Andrew Baham
