The University of New Orleans’ fall Career Fair drew 130 employers and about 550 students seeking employment and internships. Several Fortune 500 companies and high-demand employers included Entergy, IBM, Laitram, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Coca-Cola, GE Digital and Boeing.
Celyn Boykin, director of career services at UNO, said the event was hugely successful, with employers such as Chevron staying on campus into the evening to conduct private interviews and GE returning this month to hold more than two dozen more.
“When they come here, they want the UNO student,” said Boykin, who, in preparation for the event, held a series of workshops for students. “A lot of these companies have leaders who are UNO alumni and they want to come back here.”
The fair, held Sept. 29, was moved from a room in the University Center into a larger gymnasium in the Human Performance Center.
The UNO Office of Career Services exists to help support students as they transition from their studies to employment. It offers advising, holds job readiness workshops, career fair orientations, and coordinates internships, cooperative education, and job shadowing opportunities for students across disciplines. The office maintains a job database that can help connect students with employers.
Upcoming career services workshops include the following:
* “A Resume that Works” on Nov. 1, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in UC 208
* “An Interview with Success” on Nov. 3, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in UC 208
