Twenty-eight University of New Orleans students have been selected to serve as Orientation Leaders for 2017, when they will begin sharing their experience and knowledge to help new students transition to UNO’s academic and student life.
Christy Heaton, director of orientation and first-year programs, said the students were selected for their leadership and they represent a cross-section of the student body in terms of age, race, major, upbringing and every other facet of life.
“We always make sure our orientation staff reflects our larger campus population,” Heaton said. “Our OLs play such an integral role in the college transition process of new students.”
The group includes 15 returning staff members and 13 new staff. They will undergo training in the winter and summer that will enable them to serve as effective resources to their fellow students.
“Orientation Leaders are successful because our student staff works hard, goes through training that includes a class in the spring semester, and understands the importance of smooth transitions for new students,” Heaton said.
