Jazz at the Sandbar is back for its 26th fall at the University of New Orleans—and so, of course, is musician, educator and legendary New Orleans jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis.
Continuing what has become a beloved tradition, the UNO music professor emeritus kicks off the fall 2016 season of Jazz at the Sandbar on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at The Cove on UNO’s campus.
Marsalis will join UNO music students on stage for two sets. He established the Jazz at the Sandbar program in spring of 1991 as a way to provide UNO jazz studies students the opportunity to perform with professional musicians in front of a live audience. Each week, the series provides a medium though which students can exercise their improvisational skills while collaborating with jazz masters.
Other highlights of this fall’s schedule include saxophonist and UNO alumnus Khari Allen Lee, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto, guitarist Hank Mackie, saxophonist Tony Dagradi and pianist Aaron Goldberg.
All shows are at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Admission is free to the UNO campus community and $5 to the general public.
Jazz at the Sandbar is presented by the UNO Department of Music with support from the UNO Student Government Association, Offbeat Media, WWNO FM, the New Orleans Theatre Association, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, and the New Orleans Jazz Celebration. All admission proceeds go to the George Brumat Memorial Scholarship Fund.
