UNO’s Excellence in Cyber Defense Research Reaffirmed

The National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security have once again designated the University of New Orleans as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research. The certification will last through the 2019 academic year. UNO is one of about 60 designated research centers in the country and the only one in Louisiana.

The goal of the Centers of Academic Excellence is to reduce vulnerability in national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research, and producing a growing pipeline of professionals with information assurance expertise.

“The Cyber Defense Research designation shows that the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security believe that important research in information assurance is being performed at the university, and that students are actively involved in that research,” said Golden Richard, professor of computer science and director of the Greater New Orleans Center for Information Assurance at UNO.

UNO is also one of only 13 institutions in the nation to hold a separate Center of Academic Excellence designation in Cyber Operations. Only three of those universities have both undergraduate and graduate programs designated, and UNO is one of them.
