University of New Orleans finance professor M. Kabir Hassan has been elected the president of the Southwestern Finance Association, an organization dedicated to the advancement of academic and professional finance.
Hassan is the Hibernia Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of New Orleans with experience as a consultant, researcher and educator. He specializes in financial institutions and markets, emerging markets and financial development, international finance, applied economics, corporate finance, Islamic finance and banking.
Hassan has played a significant leadership role in the Southwestern Finance Association for more than 20 years; most recently he served as a board member and vice president of program for the association’s annual conference in Houston. As program chair, Hassan solicited papers covering all aspects of finance and financial education and created a program of 209 evaluated papers which were presented at the March 2015 conference. During his two decades with the association, he has helped UNO doctoral students present, network and secure employment.
The Southwestern Finance Association encourages the development and dissemination of new ideas and research in finance, and supports the advancement of pedagogical and instructional methods in financial education. Organized in 1961, its members are from throughout the U.S. as well as a number of foreign countries.
