The University of New Orleans will hold a reception for the opening of a new mural on the Fine Arts Building on Friday, June 19 from 6-9 p.m. in the building’s courtyard. The mural, entitled “Explosive Effort,” is by a group of artists known collectively as TIM (Time is Money Crew), comprised of UNO alumni. The reception is open to the public.
The 630-square-foot mural is spray paint and exterior latex on corrugated metal. The content is comprised of everyday things reinterpreted into a modern context. Imagery is presented in a complex composition along with a union of vivid colors. The design blends animated, illustrative and commercial imagery into a collision of different layers and movements. The images hold personal significance among the artists, and aims to relate something much more than what they convey on the surface. The title relates to a working mindset shared among the artists. “Explosive Effort” expresses a collective eagerness to enter the realm of spray painted, large-scale murals and the dedication to perpetuate this particular art form.
TIM (Time Is Money Crew) is a collective of artists from the New Orleans area that has been working together since 2014. The group’s work is influenced by Pop and commercial imagery related to consumer culture. The images and colors used in its works signify personal narratives along with nostalgic relation. TIM works with spray paint as its main medium to paint large-scale murals.
