The University of New Orleans International Alumni Association will honor distinguished alumni and recognize the University’s contributions to the economic and social fabric of greater New Orleans at its annual Distinguished Alumni Celebration on Thursday, November 5 at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport Atrium.
The Distinguished Alumni Celebration is an annual event held during the University’s Alumni Week (November 2-7) to salute UNO’s many accomplished alumni and celebrate the extraordinary educational and professional contributions that the University of New Orleans has afforded its more than 75,000 graduates. The reception will feature music by UNO jazz studies students, a silent auction and an awards presentation.

Roy A. Glapion, a member of the class of 1987, will receive the Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Award. Glapion holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Glapion is currently vice president of The Beta Group, an engineering and construction firm that specializes in materials testing. Previously, he served as co-founder and president of Citywide Testing and Inspections, Inc., where he employed more than 100 people across New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana. Glapion is a member of the board of directors of the New Orleans Regional Black Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission and serves as secretary of the New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation. In 2013, he was named the 2013 Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Laureate.
Outstanding alumni from each of the University’s other four academic colleges and one program of study will also be honored. Those honorees are:
• College of Liberal Arts: Miranda Restovic, president and executive director of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities;
• College of Business Administration: Chris Maurer, CEO of the UNO Federal Credit Union;
• College of Education and Human Development: Merlyna M. Valentine, executive director of elementary schools for St. Charles Parish Public Schools;
• College of Sciences: Margot C. LaPointe, vice president for research at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich.;
• Interdisciplinary Studies: Theo Von, actor and comedian.
“The UNO Alumni Association looks forward to this event as a festive reunion where we can join together in support of the University and celebrate the contributions of its graduates to advance the industry, culture and economy of the region,” said Al Herrera, president of the UNO International Alumni Association.
The Alumni Celebration will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Atrium at the Lakefront Airport, 6001 Stars and Stripes Blvd. Tickets are $75 in advance or $100 at the door. Proceeds from the event support the critical work of UNO alumni engagement and student scholarships. Distinguished alumni reception sponsorship packages are still available.
