Dr. Zender will discuss recent archaeological explorations at the Classic Maya site of Cahal Pech, Belize. Excavations undertaken during the past decade have disclosed a lengthy period of occupation from Preclassic times (ca. 400 BC) through to the end of the Classic Perod (ca. AD 900), indicating a successful population navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of warfare which defined much of this period. He will also detail the discovery last summer of a rich Late Classic tomb complete with hieroglyphic inscriptions. The historical texts tell a complementary story, associating the tomb's occupant with an expansionist dynasty.
