Vijaya Gopu, Ph.D., is Professor and Edward G. Schlieder Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of New Orleans, and Associate Director for External Programs at Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC). He has been on the University of New Orleans faculty since July 2008. Prior to joining the University of New Orleans, Dr. Gopu served as the Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments at Tulane University (2003-2007) and the University of Alabama – Huntsville (2000-2003). At Huntsville, he also held the position of Associate Director for the University Transportation Center (UTC) for Alabama. Dr. Gopu also holds the position of Formosa Plastics Distinguished Professor Emeritus at LSU where he served for 22 years. Dr. Gopu served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator of over $10M of research projects funded by local, state, federal and international agencies. Dr. Gopu is active in several national and international technical committees, and has served as a member of several federal interagency working groups. He serves as the Chairman of the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee on Wood. He was the Conference Chair for the World Conference on Timber Engineering held in New Orleans in 1996. While serving at NSF, he established a $20 million joint NSF-HUD initiative in support of President Clinton’s PATH --Partnership for Advancing Technologies for Housing – program. Dr. Gopu is the Chair of the Industrial Advisory Board for the NSF Center for Integration of Composites into Infrastructure and a regular evaluator of the NSF Earthquake Equipment Sites in the NEES Network. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Louisiana.
