Early Childhood Education (B.S.)

Shaping young minds is a tremendous task as the early years of a child’s life are the most critical for academic, social, and emotional development. With a degree in early childhood education from UNO you will be a part of establishing this important foundation in children's lives.

As a major of early childhood education, you will be challenged by a program of study, accredited by the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), to become a successful and professional individual within a complex and diverse classroom environment. You will receive a firm grounding in the curriculum and instruction in early childhood teaching as well as a broad educational background by completing general education courses in English, mathematics, humanities, and sociology. In addition, you will do course work to receive teacher certification from the Louisiana Department of Education for grades pre-kindergarten to 3rd grade, qualifying you to teach young children at the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and early elementary levels in programs sponsored by schools and community agencies.

Practical experience is another significant part of the early childhood education degree program and professional growth. You will have ample opportunities to apply the skills, theories, and techniques in early childhood classrooms and settings through a series of field experiences that support candidates in individual, small group, and whole class instruction.

Graduates of the early childhood education degree program often find positions in head start programs, day care centers or family day care homes, elementary schools, hospitals, recreation centers or other child-oriented businesses.
